When an Oregon family asks us what the move to the Treasure Valley is really like, we start with the same sentence every time: the good news is the sun, and the homework is the taxes. Everything else sorts itself out in the first season.
The sun and the dry
Boise averages roughly 206 sunny days a year and about 13 inches of precipitation, while Portland sees more like 144 sunny days and about 38 inches of rain. It is a semi-arid high desert, which means hot, dry summers, cold but sunny winters, and a lot less time staring at a gray ceiling.
Taxes, both directions
Oregon has no sales tax but a steep graduated income tax that reaches 9.9 percent at the top. Idaho flips it: a flat 5.3 percent income tax for 2025 and 2026, Social Security exempt, plus a 6 percent sales tax (Idaho State Tax Commission, rates in effect for 2025 and 2026) that does apply to most groceries (with a grocery tax credit for residents). For many filers the income tax drops meaningfully, while the sales tax is a new line to budget.
The 30-day clock
Idaho gives new residents 30 days from establishing residency to get a driver's license and to title and register vehicles. It is easy to miss in the chaos of moving week, so put it on the calendar the day you arrive.

Verify before you rely
Tax rates: Idaho's flat 5.3% income tax and 6% sales tax per the Idaho State Tax Commission, in effect for 2025 and 2026; Oregon's graduated income tax tops out at 9.9% per Oregon tax schedules. Weather figures follow BestPlaces climate data, consistent with NOAA 1991-2020 normals. Ask our team for the latest before you rely on any of it.
