Relocation guide, the plan

Your move to the Treasure Valley, in order.

This is the exact sequence we walk our relocation families through, from the first phone call to the first full week in Idaho. Use it as your master plan: the steps run in the order that saves the most money and the most stress, and every one is a real task we help with daily.

  1. Hire a local team first

Before you fall in love with a listing, get a Treasure Valley agent and a local lender on your side. They keep you honest about towns, pricing, and timeline.

Ask us to set up a short intro call within your first week of research.

  2. Do the budget and tax math

Compare your current cost of living with Boise's, run the income-tax, property-tax, and sales-tax picture, and model your equity transfer.

Rates change; confirm with the agencies and a tax professional before you commit.

  3. Plan a scouting visit

Spend a few days in the valley, not a few hours. Drive the towns, try the commutes at real times, and sit in the neighborhoods you are considering.

We will build a custom tour of the towns that match your criteria and show you the reality, not the brochure.

  4. Narrow neighborhoods and schools

Use our towns guide to shortlist, then confirm school-district boundaries for each address. Boundaries can split a street.

Check the district's official enrollment map, and ask us to verify before you offer.

  5. Get financing in order

Talk to a lender early, get pre-approval, and understand how your current home sale and new purchase will overlap.

We work with local lenders daily and can connect you to the right fit.

  6. Sort job and employer logistics

If you are transferring or going remote, confirm tax withholding, workers' comp, and whether your employer must register in Idaho.

This is a tax professional conversation, but we see it cause more delays than almost anything else.

  7. Book your mover or shipping plan

Decide between a full-service mover, a pod-style container, or driving a truck, and book weeks ahead for the popular summer season.

Get three quotes and lock dates before you schedule closing.

  8. Start the address dominoes

File a USPS change of address, and update banks, credit cards, subscriptions, insurance, and your voter registration as you go.

Keep a running list so nothing slips after the boxes are packed.

  9. List or sell your current home

If you are selling, time it so your equity is ready when the Boise deal closes. Your agent back home and our team coordinate the gap.

Ask us for a trusted listing-agent referral wherever your current home is.

  10. Set up utilities and moving day

Schedule power, water, gas, internet, and trash for the new address, and confirm the moving company's arrival window.

Do this the week of, so the lights are on before the truck backs in.

  11. Transfer your license and plates

Idaho gives new residents 30 days to get a driver's license and to title and register vehicles. Make this your first official task after arrival.

Bring your out-of-state license, title, and proof of residency to the county DMV.

  12. Register to vote and enroll in school

Once you are a resident, register to vote in Idaho and complete school enrollment for the kids before the first day.

Your district's office can walk you through the paperwork.

  13. Set up health care

Find primary care, transfer prescriptions, and update insurance before an urgent need comes up.

The Treasure Valley's health systems are two of its largest employers, so options are strong.

  14. Settle in like a local

Join a neighborhood page, find your coffee spot, and give yourself grace for the first six months.

We send our favorite local haunts, so you feel at home by week one.

The 30-day arrival sprint

Idaho law gives new residents 30 days from establishing residency to transfer a driver's license and to title and register vehicles. Put this on your calendar the day you arrive, because it is the task most people forget until a late-filing notice arrives.

  • Get your Idaho driver's license (within 30 days)
  • Title and register your vehicles (within 30 days)
  • Enroll kids in school
  • Set up health care and prescriptions
  • Update insurance and mailing addresses

Driver's license and registration timelines follow the Idaho Transportation Department's New to Idaho guidance. Residency details can vary by county; confirm with ITD and your county DMV.
