The 30-Day Reset: Licenses & Registration

Idaho law gives new residents 30 days from establishing residency to get an Idaho driver's license and to title and register their vehicles, whether or not the out-of-state documents have expired. It is the most commonly forgotten deadline in the whole move.

Do the license first

Bring your out-of-state license, proof of identity, and proof of residency to the county DMV (Idaho Transportation Department). You will surrender your old license and walk out with an Idaho one.

Then title and register vehicles

You must title a vehicle in Idaho before you can register it, and late title work can carry a penalty. Gather your out-of-state title, lien documents if there is a loan, and the registration forms, and do both at the county DMV.

Bundle it with the rest

The same first month is the right time to register to vote, enroll kids in school, and set up health care. If you take care of all of it in one focused week, you never have to think about it again.

Timeline follows the Idaho Transportation Department's New to Idaho guidance, and residency details can vary by county, so confirm with ITD and your county DMV. Ask us what to bring, and we will email you the checklist.

Verify before you rely
